Sleep apnea treatment - Westminster, CO

Have Restful Nights for a Change

Replace Daytime Sleepiness with Energy

People with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have disrupted sleep and low blood oxygen levels. When obstructive sleep apnea occurs, the tongue is sucked against the back of the throat. This blocks the upper airway and airflow stops. When the oxygen level in the brain becomes low enough, the sleeper partially awakens, the obstruction in the throat clears, and the flow of air starts again, usually with a loud gasp.

Repeated cycles of decreased oxygenation lead to very serious cardiovascular problems. Additionally, these individuals suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness, depression, and loss of concentration.

Some patients have obstructions that are less severe called Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS). In either case, the individuals suffer many of the same symptoms.

Benefits of Sleep Apnea Treatment

There are numerous benefits to sleep apnea treatment, including but not limited to:

Image

Improved sleep.

People with sleep apnea can stop breathing up to 90 times an hour, leaving them feeling tired and groggy in the morning. With treatment, you can sleep through the night and wake up feeling more refreshed.

Image

Fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression.

The risk of mental illnesses like depression and anxiety increases in correlation with the increase in sleep disturbances. Sleep apnea treatment may help improve anxiety and depression or reduce the risk of developing it.

Image

Reduced risk of developing cancer.

Individuals with untreated obstructive sleep apnea have a higher risk of various types of cancer. With sleep apnea treatment, however, that risk can be lowered.

Image

Reduced mortality rate.

Sleep apnea has been shown to increase a person’s mortality rate by up to three times the average, for any cause of death, including heart attacks and stroke. Treatment lowers this risk and helps individuals live longer with a better quality of life.

Image

Improved blood pressure.

Many individuals with sleep apnea also have untreated hypertension, which can go on to cause serious health problems if not addressed. Treating sleep apnea can, by proxy, treat hypertension by reducing blood pressure during sleep.

Many patients are interested in oral appliance therapy because they cannot use the CPAP machine.

Oral appliances are:

  • Small

  • Easy to transport

  • Do not involve hoses or masks

  • Do not rely on electricity

  • And make no noise

In many cases, oral appliances are as effective as CPAP; in some cases, CPAP is a better option. Dr. Stamm-Winter will review your sleep study with you to help determine if oral appliance therapy or CPAP is best for you.

Sometimes a Snore is Something More

Many people who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) go years without being diagnosed, which puts them at risk for heart attack, stroke, or even death. They may be unaware that they can be treated by an OSA specialist like Dr. Stamm-Winter, who offers non-surgical solutions for treating sleep apnea. She has helped countless patients gain relief from their symptoms through the use of an oral appliance. Patients needing either of these devices will use it at night to keep their airway open. Since both are custom-made, no matter which treatment Dr. Stamm-Winter recommends, the patient is sure to feel comfortable. Say good-bye to interrupted sleep and groggy days and gain back your health and well-being.

Meet Dr. Heather Stamm-Winter

I am so excited to bring this integrative approach to our Bradburn Village community. As a dentist, I have always been focused on oral health, but never realized I was missing a key component: the tongue. The tongue is one of the strongest and hardest working muscles in the body. In the myofunctional therapy certification, I learned the role the tongue plays not only in our facial development and symmetry but also in our breathing and head and neck position.
